Not only do Matt and Brittney explore these locations like regular tourists, they also go behind-the-scenes with interactive experiences that kids can only dream of. Join Matt and Brittney as they dive with sharks, feed tigers, and perform in dolphin shows. Kid Guides is your ticket to fun and adventure!

Downtown Aquarium, Houston, Texas
Matt and Brittney see an alligator feeding, learn about the ecology around oil rigs (this is Texas, remember?), and help to create toys for some playful White Tigers. They do some hands-on shark feeding (and even get to keep their hands!). Matt really gets into the spirit of aquarium work when he dons scuba equipment and helps to clean some tanks. Yuck! In “Explorer’s Corner,” Matt and Brittney help to train and feed the White Tigers. Featured “Animal Star” — piranhas!

Shedd Aquarium, Chicago, Illinois
Matt and Brittney travel to Chicago to visit one of the top two aquariums in the nation. If you were a fish, this is where you’d want to live! Interactive sessions include learning all about Caribbean coral reefs, getting the low-down on crabs from around the world, and participating in the water with a whale training and feeding session (you heard right — “in the water!”). In “Explorer’s Corner,” Matt and Brittney get to play veterinarian and do “physical exams” on sharks! Featured “Animal Star” — the Japanese Spider Crab, the largest crab in the world!

Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey, California
Matt and Brittney get a big-time education about the awesome variety of fish living in the coastal waters and reefs of California. Matt cleans up poop in a sea ray tank (somebody’s gotta do it!), and both Matt and Brittney grab their scuba gear to explore the aquarium’s outdoor exhibits from beneath the surface and behind their goggles. In “Explorer’s Corner,” Matt and Brittney go behind-the-scenes of the aquarium’s world-renowned jellyfish program. Featured “Animal Star” — the Tuna!

Reviews

” This live-action program… create safe conditions for the animals and informative display for visitors. Stunning underwater photography… The kid hosts are refreshingly real, never resorting to manufactured enthusiasm as they explorer the facilities. Originally airing on television, this fast-paced program with short, snappy segments features accompanying maps and upbeat background music.” -Booklist

“Want to see through a jellyfish? Watch sharks being fed? See what a tuna looks like? Matt and Brittney, two young narrators, take viewers on amazing tours of three of the best aquariums in the United States. In each location, live-action photography and interviews with trainers and keepers offer an up-close visit to an aquarium. Each tour starts with a map pinpointing the location. After a quick city tour of famous landmarks, Matt and Brittney enter the aquarium. The photography of each facility and the marine life is breathtaking. At the Downtown Aquarium in Houston, there are sea horses, a diver in a tank, and a white tiger being trained to hunt using a papier-mâché animal. Viewers are taken under a glass tank of sharks and visit piranhas. The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago houses green sea turtles, Amazon fish and reptiles, a coral reef exhibit, a trainer working with beluga whales, and more. A vet, while conducting physical exams on sharks, talks about careers in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine. The Monterey Bay regional aquarium in California is next, where all the sea animals are local to the waters right outside the facility. A curator demonstrates how they grow their own kelp. There are touch tanks, a marine sanctuary, splash zones where the kids put on wet suits and dive tanks to get inside the exhibits. The “Explorer’s Corner” section reviews the previous three segments. Wonderful music segues between exhibits. Matt and Brittney sparkle with child-like delight and ask intelligent questions. Each segment can be selected individually from the DVD menu. This gem is the next best thing to an actual visit to these aquariums.”- School Library Journal
