This seven-hour HDTV series explores the diversity of Spain’s people, history, architecture, and landscapes. From Roman aqueducts, giant castles and flamenco guitarists to bullfighting lessons, saffron cultivation and seaside villages, enjoy spectacular photography and intriguing cultural video essays that bring the spirit and history of Spain to life.
Episode 1: “El Corazon” Nightlife & museums in Madrid, the palace monastery El Escorial, Segovia & its Roman aqueduct, Avila, Toros Guisando & Toledo. Featuring the museums and night life of Madrid, El Escorial, the sprawling palace monastery built by King Felipe II, Segovia, in the central plateau, with its Roman aqueduct, Avila, with some of Europe’s best preserved medieval walls, Toros Guisando, stone bull carvings from the Iberian era, and Toledo’s famous Damasquinado artisans.
Episode 2: “Pilgrim Route” Follow the ancient route of Caminode Compostela, traveled for over ten centuries by pilgrims heading to the crypt of St. James the apostle. Join the journeys of current day pilgrims along this ancient trek to Santiago de Compostela. Segments also include Finisterre, the western most point of Europe, discover fly fishing near Leon, and experience the colorful vineyards of La Rioja region.
Episode 3: “Coastal North” A stunning visual adventure exploring the Basque country’s most spectacular scenery. Segments include the remarkable Frank Geary designed Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain’s major resort region of San Sebastian, the famous lace makers of Camarinas, a look at Spain’s commercial fishing industry, surfing, and the Picos de Europa
Episode 4: “Barcelona” Discover Barcelona, the city that was a major influence in development of the Iberian peninsula. Segments include a guided tour of the Modernist architecture of Antoni Gaudi, and the ancient Catalan dance of the Sardana.
Episode 5: “Mediterranean” From Roman ruins and ancient castles to modern art and architecture, explore Spain’s dynamic coast. Segments include fishing for anchovies, bullfighting lessons, a paella party aboard a canal boat, Pueblas Blancas, the beautiful and dramatic city of Ronda and “Escolanets de Montserrat,” the oldest boy’s choir In Europe.
Episode 6: “Southwest” Visit Andalucia, Sevilla (with one of the largest cathedrals in the world), and the Alcazar Palace with excellent Mudahar architecture. Highlights also include flamenco and Spanish guitarists, Spain’s best preserved Roman ruins in Merida, and the small villages of the conquistadors Pizarro and Cortez.
Episode 7: “Castles, Cathedrals & Roman Ruins” The history of the Iberian Peninsula comes alive through the legends & stone architecture of Spain’s most treasured buildings & monuments. Visit these spectacular icons of the past dating to Roman, Moor and Christian influences. These diverse cultures designed cathedrals and castles that contain some of Europe’s finest art collections and historical architecture. Also featuring a visit to the region where the ancient spice Saffron was developed by the Moors.
