An enchanting story of the relationship between a teenage Norwegian girl named Katrine and a newborn harbor seal.
It was filmed by the renowned Norwegian nature and wildlife filmmaker, Trygve Berge, along the visually spectacular western coast of Norway. Each year, a few seal pups are left orphaned off the rocky Norwegian coastline. When Katrine finds a two-day-old baby seal alone on a tiny island of rock, she rescues it from certain death, brings it to her home and names him Selik. What follows is a bittersweet tale of adventure, laughter, and tears. The bond that develops between Katrine and Selik during the seals recuperation is all the more poignant because Katrine knows she must return Selik to the open sea once he is healthy and strong and has learned to survive in the wild.

“Will enrapture animal lovers…” -Booklist
“Set on the northwestern coast of Norway, this video tells about the struggle of a teenage girl and her father to raise an orphan harbor seal who was a few days old when they found it…. The background music helps in setting the moods of the different scenes, especially when the seal and the girl are interacting with nature. … The photography is stunningly clear, including underwater footage, and much of the narration is factual information about both seals and marine animals collected or observed by Katrine. … This fine film for family viewing stands on its own, but viewers are likely to ask for the first film once they see this.” -School Library Journal
“A Norwegian teen and her dad rescue a baby harbor seal abandoned on the rocks. The story of her summer raising the seal and preparing him to return to life in the sea is delightful and will entertain the entire family and anyone interested in animals….There are lovely underwater scenes of the two gracefully gliding among fascinating vegetation. … There is excellent photography, especially the underwater scenes, appropriate music, and a good script. The video is good entertainment and could be used in schools with a variety of subjects. -Video Rating Guide for Libraries
“The relationship that develops between the newborn harbor seal, Selik, and Katrine Berge, the teenage girl who saves him, is full of humor and affection. Selik plays, nibbles wildflowers, kisses Katrine, climbs stairs, cuddles like a baby, and is generally adorable. … Unobtrusively educational, the film is a lovely package for presenting facts about seals, information about the Norwegian climate, and a good lesson in responsibility and commitment to the world around us.” -Children’s Video Report
