Meltdown: In the Shadow of Nepal’s Lost Glaciers

in A-Z,Current Affairs,Nature,Science,Specials

Meltdown (key art)Like the polar regions, the mountains are the first to react to global warming, and in the Himalaya temperatures are rocketing. This film visits the Everest region to look at the catastrophic effects the escalating glacial melt is having, meeting a Nepali people in danger of being literally washed away.In 1986 a small glacial lake in the Khumbu region of Nepal burst its banks washing away a hydro-electric power station, many bridges and many lives. This was just a taste of what is to come. There are much bigger lakes now and before long they will burst their banks too. The Nepali people really are living on borrowed time. For those that thought the romantic picture of the snow-capped Himalayan peak was permanent, this is a rude wake-up call.

The Himalayan environment is dramatically changing and it is an indicator of dangerous effects that are going to ripple around the globe. This film follows a UN-led expedition to look at the escalating glacial melt that is starting to consume Nepal’s high mountains. The implications are extreme. Huge lakes are forming behind moraine dams, dams which could burst at any time.

The film ventures into the region to look at evidence of recent floods and to visit a dammed lake the experts believe might soon release 30 million tons of water onto the 7000 Nepalis who live below it. This provocative film brings a new angle to the issue of global warming. The film includes dramatic scenery, an ascent of a 6000 meter mountain and interviews with a leading Buddhist monk, a Nepali environmentalist, local witnesses to disasters, a UN official, and glaciologists and global warming experts.
