What does it take to be a Silicon Valley entrepreneur? A willingness to risk everything. That’s the message of this new series featuring interviews with some of the high-tech industry’s most successful entrepreneurs. Hosted by journalist Mike Malone, editor of digital-age Forbes ASAP magazine and author of some of the most definitive books on Silicon Valley.

Malone’s interviews with Bill Gates (Microsoft), Scott McNealy (Sun Microsystems), Gordon Moore (Intel Corporation), Kim Polese (Marimba, Inc.), Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple Computer) and others reveal how these legends and near-legends of technology endured the crucible of entrepreneurship and won.

Malone takes viewers up-close and personal with heads of industry to see what motivated them, inspired them, and caused them to continue despite odds that were stacked against them. The interviews reveal a side of these famed leaders previously unseen, the human side. Advance Micro Device’s CEO Jerry Sanders tells how, as a teenager, he was beaten up so badly in a gang fight that he was hospitalized in a coma and was administered last rites. “I’ve been covering Silicon Valley for more than 20 years and I thought I understood entrepreneurs,” says Malone. “But this series was a revelation. It destroys almost every myth we have about high-tech companies and the men and women who create them.”

Experience difficult riding conditions, mechanical breakdowns, accidents, and learn about the intrigue of the Silk Road’s history, countries, and cultures that make the hardships more than worthwhile.

Episode 1: Turkey
Leaving the west behind, 18 motorcyclists begin an 8000-mile journey on the Silk Road from Istanbul Xian, China. Ancient Nicea provides an opportunity to visit a pottery workshop and a visit to a bazaar in Bursa shows how important silk is, even in present times. The village of Safranbolu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a collection of historic Ottoman houses and an opportunity to experience an old caravanserai or “camel motel”. Cappadocia is a landscape of fairy chimneys and rock towers and the group gets a chance to take a contour balloon excursion. Heading towards the Black Sea, the riders lay over in Amasya which was an important city in Turkey’s fight for independence. Preparing for their first border crossing, they have a chance to reflect on how much they have seen and experienced on this portion of the ancient Silk Road.

Episode 2: Georgia, Azerbaijan & Turkmenistan
Known for its scenic beauty, legendary wine and generous hospitality, Georgia belongs neither to the east nor the west. Crossing the border into the former Soviet Republic, the riders experience an immediate contrast in cultures. In the capitol of Tbilisi the group learns about violence ahead in Uzbekistan. Outside the hotel, sirens wail and hundreds of ambulances arrive on scene, in preparation for what? Riding across Azerbaijan is a cold and wet and challenges the resolve of the motorcyclists. A stop for tea with the locals is a chance to participate in this important part of the culture. At the caravansary in Sheki, locals arrive with vodka in hand and a celebration ensues. The oil industry dominates life in Baku, the capitol of Azerbaijan. In Turkmenistan, a strange country ruled by a bizarre dictator who has erected dozens of monuments in honor of himself. The capitol of Ashgabat is a gleaming jewel of marble buildings, golden monuments and flowing fountains – in direct contrast to the stark and forbidding desert beyond. The Tolkuchka Oriental Bazaar is one of the most vibrant and largest open markets in Central Asia and the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with the Silk Roads most famous beasts of burden – at the Camel Market. 7000 years of Central Asian history is on display in ancient Merv, one of the largest oasis on the ancient Silk Road.

Episode 3: Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan
Political unrest in Uzbekistan threatens the safety of the group as they head across Central Asia and the team of motorcyclists is forced to ride in convoy under the watchful eyes of local police. Cultural highlights of the Silk Road in the former Soviet Republic include a stunning collection of historic treasures, mosques, minarets and the oldest Koran in existence. In Kyrgyzstan the team heads into the spectacular geography of the Tian Shan Mountains and Lake Issy-Kul, meeting a group of nomadic horsemen who share cultural games. One of the riders is injured near the border of Kazakhstan before the team arrives in the city of Almaty.

Episode 4: China
After more than a month of motorcycling across Central Asia from Istanbul, the GlobeRiders cross the Korghass Pass and arrive in western China. After stopping briefly in Urumqi, the city furthest from any ocean in the wolrd, the motorcyclists head across the Gobi Desert under oppressive heat. Explorations in the oasis city of Turpan reveal the heart of a grape growing region. Dangerous riding conditions plague the team as they cross China with road construction, detours, fatigue and traffic making things difficult as they head to their final destination. Cultural explorations in China include a visit to the western part of the Great Wall, pigskin rafting on the Yellow River and Xian’s army of Terra cotta warriors.

Produced by the U.S. Foreign Policy Association in association with the University of Delaware, each episode takes on a different region or topic critical to an understanding of the changing world in 2009, offering insider tidbits and expert opinion on where we are, where we’re going and how we can get there, encouraging Americans to make a “Great Decision” of their own.

Now in its 24th season in the U.S., the Great Decisions Television Series, hosted by former CNN World Affairs Correspondent Ralph Begleiter, is the longest running television program devoted solely to international affairs and foreign policy.

Rather than focusing on breaking news of the moment, or bringing in two extreme perspectives and letting them have at it, Great Decisions takes a broader look at these topics:

Great Decisions 2008:
Episode 1: Exiting Iraq: Deadline for Democracy: As bombs and bloodshed continue to dominate news in Iraq, the U.S. commitment continues with no end in sight. Some of the best minds in Washington and Baghdad examine the way forward.

Episode 2: European Union at 50: It’s the world’s largest economy, but fiercely shuns the use of force to project power. Fifty years after its creation in the aftermath of World War II, has the European Union finally reached “superpower” status?

Episode 3: Dangerous Dialog: Talking with the Enemy: Iran. North Korea. Hamas. The U.S. has no shortage of enemies worldwide. Should American diplomats engage with the enemy in an age of terrorism and nuclear proliferation?

Episode 4: Reexamining Russia: Critics of Russia claim the Kremlin is centralizing power and distorting democracy. Are such charges justified, and what should the world expect in the post-Putin era?

Episode 5: Waning War Machine? The State of the U.S. Military: Counterterrorism. Reconstruction. Nation-building. Are America’s armed forces prepared to fight today’s battles and simultaneously protect the homeland, or is the U.S. military dangerously overstretched?

Episode 6: The Latin American Left: Though oil-rich Venezuela’s radical President Hugo Chavez continues to agitate American policymakers, strong economic performances in Brazil and Chile are causing many to rethink relations with the region.

Episode 7: Out of Balance: U.S.-China Trade: When Chinese President Hu Jintao came to the U.S., his agenda placed visits to Microsoft and Boeing ahead of a trip to the White House. Where do trade relations between the U.S. and China stand today?

Episode 8: Philanthropy and the Rise of Global Giving: Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and a slew of celebrities have given billions towards alleviating poverty and improving health conditions the world over. But do such efforts provide more than good publicity?

Great Decisions 2009
Episode 1: Running Out: The Global Food Crisis. In 2008, global food shortages hit countries hard around the world. What factors are behind the crisis?

Episode 2: Off the Grid: Energy & the U.S. Economy. As the promise of a new energy economy takes hold, which policies will the U.S. pursue to reduce its dependence on oil?

Episode 3: Rising Giants: The World’s Fastest Growing Counties. For nearly two decades, the U.S. has been the world’s sole superpower. But a number of countries are poised to play a larger role on the world stage.

Episode 4: Race for the Arctic. The opening of the North West Passage could be the definitive event of our time. Arctic countries, including the U.S., are currently engaged in a race to claim this route and its resources.

Episode 5: Cuba After Castro. With Fidel Castro out of power, his brother Raul has instituted a number of reforms. Is a new Cuba policy for America on the horizon?

Episode 6: Border Patrol: Pakistan and Afghanistan. Eight years after 9/11 the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan is as lawless as ever. Should the U.S. revamp its role in the region?

Episode 7: Human Rights: “Never Again,” Again and Again. Sixty years after the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, what role for the UN, and countries like the U.S. and China?

Episode 8: From Pharoahs to Facebook: Egypt Today. Great Decisions travels to Cairo to explore the economic, social and political changes taking place in Egypt today.

The Handley Page Halifax four-engined heavy bomber was the unsung hero of Bomber Command during the Second World War. It flew over 39,000 sorties over enemy territory, towed gliders, dropped agents, carried cargo, and pioneered electronic warfare.

It was capable of enduring heavy battle damage and brought many soldiers home safely. Yet it was controversial and considered poor in comparison to the more famous Lancaster.

After the war, the aircraft was almost forgotten, most were melted down. But it was not forgotten by the men who flew the Halifax. This film reveals vivid accounts of what the aircraft was like to fly in battle and recounts the whole story of this aircraft from design to her final conversion as a post-war airliner. Using never-seen-before footage of the Halifax in action, the film tells the story of how the initial problems of design were conquered.

In all 6,178 were built. Today only three remain. The story of how the Halifax Aircraft Association rescued NA-337 from the depths of a Norwegian Lake and restored her is a stunning tribute to all those who flew and fought in the Halifax.

The fair was a brawling, costly and altogether chaotic event, but few of the 52 million people who attended noticed. Acclaimed public television producer Rich Hanley draws on the delightful memories of fairgoers who found a hope for the future, an understanding of other cultures, and a delicious Belgian waffle for just a dollar. So jump in that old station wagon and take a ride back to the 1964 New York World’s Fair!

“Actor Judd Hirsch narrates this engaging homage to planner Robert Moses’ almost-failed dream. Combining b/w and color archive footage shot at the fair, along with contemporary interviews with adults who recall their childhood adventures at the fair, this nostalgic blast from the past is sure to trigger fond memories in viewers… sure to be popular. recommended.” *** Stars – Video Librarian

Often overlooked by medical experts, the WAY we use our body often creates disease. Why do couch potatoes and competitive athletes suffer from the same chronic ailments, disease, and pain? It’s because, like most of us, neither group is using their body in the way it was mechanically designed to be used!

Analyzing human movement (biomechanics) used to be for increasing athletic performance until biomechanical scientist Katy Bowman decided to apply those same principles to the every-day use of the human machine for the purpose of reducing common disease.

This scientific, instructional and “user-friendly” series will show you what your body SHOULD be able to do; What your body CAN do right now and what specific movements you need to do (in the comfort of your own home!) to repair your human machine!

Episode Descriptions

Episode 101: When Your Doctor Prescribes Exercise – When your doctor recommends exercise, they are usually not referring to high-impact exercise, intense bouts, or even athletics. Here are a handful of simple exercises for opening the key joints of the hips, shoulders and spine, to improve full-body health issues like hypertension and raising good cholesterol. A great place to get started!

Episode 102: When You Hurt All Over – What’s one to do when you hurt all over but your doctor tells you that you need to exercise? These gentle stretching exercises will improve the flow of blood and lymph, even to the extremities, reduce internal pressures, raise immunity, and improve muscle strength.

Episode 103: Fix Your Feet – Most foot pain is entirely preventable and reversible through a thoughtfully designed exercise routine. Fallen arches, inflamed fascia, and over- tight foot muscles are all created through movement habits, and can quickly improve when those habits are corrected.

Episode 104: Knees and Hips – While the causes of knee and hip problems are as varied as individual sufferers, the mechanics of these joints are the same in everyone. These exercises stretch and strengthen the muscles most involved in preserving the health and mobility of these important joints. The exercises are adaptable even if you’ve had a joint replacement. They are challenging — and necessary– for runners and other athletes who suffer from knee or hip problems.

Episode 105: Below the Belt For Men – It is a well-hidden fact that pelvic floor disorders (PFD) are just as common among men and women, especially when you add in prostate conditions and sexual dysfunction. You’ll learn how misalignment decreases the strength of the muscles that hold the weight of the organs off of the prostate, and how a handful of specifically chosen exercises will begin to bring the body back into alignment and increase blood flow to extremities in this area.

Episode 106: Down There For Women – More than 80 percent of women will suffer pelvic floor disorders in their lifetime, yet most women have no idea that pelvic alignment is essential for proper pelvic floor function. Katy shows an a easy-to-follow protocol for stretching and strengthening the muscles that keep the pelvis aligned, allowing the pelvic floor to operate less like a hammock and more like a trampoline.

Episode 107: When You Can’t Breathe – You were taught to swim, how to ride a bike, and even how to walk, though you probably don’t remember it. Breathing is comprised of coordinated muscle movements just like all of these, but chances are nobody has ever shown how to do it correctly. Bowman explains the mechanics of optimal breathing, and the exercises that will train the muscles to increase oxygen intake!

Episode 108: Easy Rx…ercise for Diabetics – Exercise prescription needs to be specific when dealing with diabetes. Intense programs can cause rapid changes in blood sugar that can stress the adrenal glands and slow metabolism. Easy Rx…ercise for Diabetics is designed to increase basal metabolic rate (metabolism) and minimize stress and adrenaline production. It offers a protocol that includes a handful of gentle exercises to improve circulation in the feet, lower legs and mid-section, specifically to meet the needs of the diabetic population.

Episode 109: My Hands Hurt: From Elbows to Fingers – With all the typing, driving and computer work done on a daily basis, it’s no wonder that the numerous muscles, bones, nerves and attachments from the elbows on down, often start to complain. Targeting all the tissues that supply the hands with health and mobility, Bowman guides you through a series of simple but profound exercises to align and unwind the neck, shoulders, elbows and hands.

Episode 110: Get Your Balance Back- To lose one’s sense of balance is to lose one’s independence. Bowman defines balance as “the ability to stand unsupported on one foot,” because that’s the skill needed to walk safely and confidently. This easy-to- follow program stretches and strengthens the muscles necessary for balance, and for independent living.

Episode 111: Biomechanics for Strong Bones – With so much misunderstanding of the term “weight-bearing,”very few women are getting the correct exercises to align their skeleton correctly. This easy-to-follow program maximizes bone-loading to create bone-building signals at the areas commonly affected by bone loss: wrists, ribs, vertebrae, and hips.

Episode 112: Biomechanics for Bad Backs – So many people suffer from chronic backaches, but where do they come from? Here you’ll come to understand the origin of the back pain, and get a simple and deeper understanding on how to re-educate the body on proper movement and alignment. These gentle exercises work to free up the spine and can even be done while traveling on the road.

Episode 113: From the Shoulders Up – Chronic headaches, foggy brain, and even pressure behind the eyes can result from long hours at the computer and a lack of mobility in the neck and shoulders. This is a basic exercise prescription for improving circulation to the neck and head, as well as tips for better typing and driving ergonomics.

Episode 114: Smart Digestion – While digestive disorders like IBS and acid reflux are often associated with nutritional choices, often times it is the position of structures like the swallowing tube, the over-compression of the abdomen associated with slouchy posture, and body position when eating! You’ll learn five exercises that maximize body efficiency for optimal digestion.

SEASON 1

#101: FLORIDA WADING BIRDS Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, a birding hot spot in Sanibel, Florida. Ding Darling is filled with glamorous wading birds. Numerous species of spectacular birds visit or live at Ding Darling such as Roseate Spoonbills, Great Blue Herons, Snowy and Great Egrets, Brown Pelicans, Double Crested Cormorants, White Ibis and Red-shouldered Hawks.

#102: MASSACHUSETTS SONGBIRDS Ken joins a tour lead by Marj Rines of the Brookline Bird Club in the Mount Auburn Cemetery. The group ventures into the famous burial ground of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Winslow Homer at dawn to catch a glimpse of the songbirds in their finest breeding plumage. Songbirds such as the Tennessee Warbler and the Scarlet Tanager flit about the trees in morning song. Meet ornithologist Don Kroodsma to learn about bird songs. Using a parabolic microphone, Don records the dawn chorus of the songbirds and then studies them at his lab.

#103: CONNECTICUT NESTS Visit Falkner Island, part of the Stuart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge in Connecticut. Falkner Island holds close to 3500 nesting pairs of Common Terns. The Common and Roseate Terns nest in unusual locations such as old tires, crates, and even in the middle of a footpath. Ken perches in an Osprey nest to explain how an Osprey raises its young. Ken learns about various nest designs, such as a Mockingbird’s nest, a Robin’s nest and a House Sparrow’s nest. Ken travels by canoe to Great Island Marsh with Dr. Paul Spitzer, the man who restored the Osprey to the mouth of the Connecticut River.

#104: FOLLOW THE FOOD Ken explores his home state of Montana. Ken and ornithology professor Dick Hutto raft down the Blackfoot River while fly fishing to follow the birds that are also looking for food by the river. They see numerous birds in this riparian habitat, such as the Tree Swallow, Western Wood Peewee, Willow Flycatcher, Yellow Warbler and Spotted Sandpiper. They even catch a glimpse of a Bald Eagle. After fly-fishing, Ken and Dick go to the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge to see birds that live in the ponds and cattails. Dick explains how to identify birds by their feeding behavior. They see Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Coots, and several other birds.

#105: AVIAN PARENTING Ken Dial explores different avian parenting techniques. Ken meets with ornithologist Josh Tewksbury whostudies Cowbird parasitism. Josh and Ken examine the coping strategies of two host species (American Redstart and Yellow Warbler). Ken visits Ninepipe National Wildlife Refuge with waterfowl researcher Alison Perkins. Ken explains the difference between altricial and precocial birds and sees several different species of birds, such as the Red-necked Grebe and the American Coot which are semi-precocial. Ken travels to Wildhorse Island with Wildlife Biologist Bill Swaney. They endure a strenuous hike in the pouring rain for a beautiful view of nesting Bald Eagles and their young. Bill explains the parenting behavior of the Bald Eagle.

#106: ARIZONA HUMMINGBIRDS Ken Dial travels to Arizona to see one of the state’s star attractions: Hummingbirds. At the Nature Conservancy’s Ramsey Canyon Preserve, Ken sees several different Hummingbirds, such as the Broad-billed, Allen’s and the Violet-crowned. See a garden that attracts hummingbirds. Ken learns about the nectar that fuels hummingbirds from researcher Peter Scott. Peter extracts nectar from different flowers and measures sugar content with a refractometer

#107: ARIZONA DESERT BIRDS Ken Dial and renowned author Kenn Kaufman explore the desert at night wearing night vision equipment. They see a Great Horned Owl and Ken explains how Owls have remarkable night vision and acute hearing which enables them to locate their prey in the dark. As day breaks, Dial and Kaufman visit nesting Cactus Wrens, Curve-billed Thrashers, Roadrunners, and the Gila Woodpecker. Ken visits a sky-diving Hawk Researcher who shows him Harris’ Hawks nesting in a giant Saguaro cactus.

#108: CALIFORNIA SEABIRDS Ken Dial visits California’s Monterey Bay. Ken takes a pelagic birding cruise. The unique submarine canyon of Monterey Bay brings the deep ocean with its nutrient rich waters close to shore. Among the pelagic birds they see are: the Common Murre, the Black-footed Albatross, the Sooty Shearwater and Sabine’s Gull. Ken takes a tour on Alcatraz Island with Ranger Daphne Hatch. Since the prison was closed in 1963, the island has become an important nesting site for Brandt’s Cormorants.

#109: CALIFORNIA SALT MARSH BIRDS Ken Dial explores the resource-rich estuaries and salt marshes of Northern California. Ken begins his journey with a quest for the elusive Rail at Palo Alto Baylands. Ken visits Elkhorn Slough and learns why birds are attracted to salt marshes by digging up the rich nutrients and foods found in the mud. Several of the birds that can be found at the Slough are: Red Phalaropes, Marbled Godwits, and Long-billed Curlews.

#110: WASHINGTON FLIGHT Ken Dial travels to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington to examine the various wing designs and flight patterns of birds. Dan Varland, a Wildilfe Biologist for Rayonier Forest Products, brings Ken to the beach to track raptors. They watch a Peregrine Falcon hunt and Ken explains how various birds benefit from different wing designs. Joe Buchanan brings Ken to Bottle Beach in Washington State, a favorite spot for flocking shorebirds. Ken takes a boat out into the ocean with biologists George Divoky and Chris Thompson to look at the wing design of Alcids. Alcids are birds like the Common Murre and Rhinoceros Aucklet that live in the ocean and feed primarily on fish.

#111: WASHINGTON PREDATOR Ken Dial looks at predators ranging from Hawks and Eagles to Gulls and the American Crow. Ken gets an up-close look at raptors with Jaye Moore, at the Northwest Raptor Rehab Center. Jaye Moore takes in injured birds from the Olympic Peninsula, such as: Cooper’s Hawk, Barred Owls, Screech Owls, and Eagles. Ken describes the different methods these birds use to capture their prey. Ken explores the Hoh Rainforest and ascends to the moss-covered branches of its canopy with professor John Marzluff. Marzluff studies corvids and their predation of the Marbled Murrelet, a seabird which nests high in the rainforest canopy. Corvids, the family of birds which includes Ravens, Crows, Jays and Magpies, are considered to be very intelligent birds. They work cooperatively and exhibit spatial memory.

#112: NEW JERSEY FALL MIGRATION Ken Dial travels to birding hotspot Cape May, New Jersey for fall migration. Cape May is a popular stopover for migrating birds to rest and refuel. With guide Megan
Edwards, Ken sees several Osprey, various Warblers and Shorebirds. Ken joins Pete Dunne, Director of the New Jersey Audubon Society’s Cape May Bird Observatory, on a Hawk Watch. Thousands of Hawks travel over Cape May as they migrate. Ken adds a Palm Warbler to his Life List. Ken explains that a Life Bird is a bird that you haven’t seen before in your life and properly identified.

#113: NEW YORK URBAN BIRDS Ken Dial travels to an unexpected location for birdwatching: New York City. But New York is home to Central Park, which attracts over 200 different species of birds. They see such birds as the Black-crowned Night-Heron, the Great Egret, and the Black-and-White Warbler. Ken learns how Mockingbirds mimic city noises including buses and car alarms. In the South Bronx, Ken joins a group of children who are part of Project PigeonWatch. Unlikely though it may be, adjacent to JFK International airport is an oasis for migrating and resident birds: the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Don Riepe, manager of the refuge, shows Ken the various birds that come to Jamaica Bay for rest and nourishment, such as Black Skimmers, Willets and Glossy Ibis.

SEASON 2

#201: RARE BIRDS OF COSTA RICA Ken Dial travels to Costa Rica in Central America in search of some of the rare and elusive birds that live in its verdant jungles and forests. First Ken stops in the lush cloud forests of Monteverde, to find the Bare-necked Umbrellabird. The male Umbrellabird sports a red, inflatatble throat pouch and a gorgeous black “umbrella” of head feathers that he opens and closes to attract a mate. Ken’s next stop is the Talamanca Mountain Range, where he looks for the Resplendent Quetzal. A gorgeous, long-tailed, green bird with a bright red stomach and mohawk coiffure. Along the journey Ken spots other exotics like the Three-wattled Bellbird, the Keel-billed Toucan, the Collard Trogon, the Emerald Toucanet as well as many North American species of birds that winter in the tropics.

#202: PRIME TROPICAL REAL ESTATE Costa Rica is a land bridge for migrating birds between North and South America so land use is a critical issue for bird conservation. Ken Dial visits some of the avian
residents of the country to see how they are faring in this beautiful and rapidly developing place. First he stops in the Cloud Forest of Monteverde to see how and why birds occupy different layers of the forest canopy. He sees the Three-Wattled Bellbirds, Woodcreepers, and Hummingbirds. Ken’s second stop is ZooAve, where he explores the status of the rare Great Green Macaw. The Green Macaw is an indicator species for Costa Rica– as land is deveolped, the Green Macaw and its avian neighbors are being evicted from their habitat.

#203: SECRETS OF THE FOREST Ken Dial explores three well-kept secrets of the forest. First he travels to the forests of Costa Rica in search of a few of the many hundreds of species of Hummingbirds that live there. Ken then visits the dark woods of Montana, home of the rare and elusive Great Gray Owl. Ken and ornithologist Jeff Marks find a Great Gray Owl nest with two nestlings. They observe the adults feeding their chicks in the wild. As they interact with the owls, Ken learns the secrets to their success as a species.

#204: TEXAS BORDER BIRDS Ken Dial visits South Texas in this episode, to see some of the hundreds of thousands of birds that stop over in Texas to refuel on their bi-annual migrations between North and South America. Ken and Bill Seegar of USFish and Wildlife trace the migration of the stunning, high-speed, Peregrine Falcon using state-of-the-art satellite tracking technology. Ken meets Bill Evans from Cornell University who is tracking the night migrations of songbirds.

#205: WHO’s WHOOO IN THE OWL WORLD? Ken Dial takes a magical mystery tour of the world of owls. In New Jersey he visits Len Soucie at the Raptor Trust to see a large number of these oft-maligned and very secretive creatures. They examine, compare, and contrast a dozen different species of rehabilitated owls: The Great Gray, the Sawhet, the Barred, and the Long-eared to name just a few. Next, Ken joins up with Bruce Colvin and his Owl Hunters as they capture and release dozens of nesting Barn Owls in NJ barns and forests for a population study that Colvin is conducting. Finally Ken goes after the smallest, toughest, meanest owl in the country, the Feruginous Pygmy Owl.

#206: ON THE ROAD Migrating birds have to stop over from time to time during their long flights to refuel. What better place to stop than Delaware Bay? May’s full moon is the signal for the annual horseshoe crab egg-laying haul-out on the beaches of Delaware Bay. Horseshoe crab eggs are a critical refueling resource for the Red Knots and Ruddy Turnstones migrating north from South America. Next Ken visits David Mizrahi of Clemson University on the beach to try to figure out what signals tell a bird it’s time to move on? A combination of weight gain and weather conditions cause a bird to become “restless” — the behavior they display just as they’re about to take-off again for the North.

#207: THERE’S SAFETY IN NUMBERS Ken Dial explores the Heronry– a colony of nesting birds in the Heron family. What are the advantages of nesting in large colonies? There is safety from predators in numbers, and food is easier to find. Herons are so skittish that they not only nest in colonies, they also nest on islands. Ken visits several islands that Herons call home. Pea Patch Island in Delaware Bay houses some of the northernmost populations of Roseate Spoonbills, Great Blues, and Snowy Egrets. And Santa Catalina hosts yet another houseful of herons.

#208: SONGBIRDS But for birds, and particularly songbirds, it’s critical to their very existence, to their survival. It allows them to attract mates, to obtain critical real estate. Ken Dial goes West to Montana and Idaho to explore the behavior, ecology and diversity of songbirds. First Ken tracks down the only aquatic songbird in the US, the American Dipper. This bird fishes for food in raging mountain rivers that a human can’t even walk through. Next, Ken joins Rex Sallabanks in Idaho to figure out who or what is destroying songbird nests. Finally, Ken joins Erick Greene of the University of Montana in a study of how the beautiful, blue Lazuli Bunting learns to sing.

#209: ALASKA SPECIAL: MYSTERIOUS MIDDLETON ISLAND There aren’t many islands in the world as inhospitable to humans as Middleton Island in the Gulf of Alaska. With no harbor for anchorage,
fiercely blowing arctic winds, and hostile seas all about, the only souls here are shipwrecked and out of luck. That is, unless you’re a seabird. Middelton is the breeding ground for enormous numbers of seven different seabirds: Tufted Puffins, Rhinoceros Auklets, 2 species of Murres, Comorants, Kittiwakes, and Glaucous-winged Gulls.

#210: ALASKA SPECIAL: GOLD RUSH Nome, Alaska is where birds still come here each spring and summer from all over the world to mate and raise their young. This is a tough land of high tundra, coastal cliffs and bare mountains. Locked in ice most of the year, it explodes with animal life for a few short months. Ken Dial goes to the ends of civiliztion to show us migratory birds at their best…long distance travelers that bring up baby in the buggiest spot on the continent. Ken finds the rare Bristle-thighed Curlew in the tundra, Golden Plovers near the coast, and a host of other Asiatic species that can only been seen in North America in Alaska during a very short window of time in the spring.

#211: BIRD DETECTIVES How do we know about the hidden lives of birds? Ken joins some New England bird sleuths as they tease out secrets of the avian world. First Ken visits Bernd Heinrich who is
looking at Raven insight. Ravens apparently learn about the world in ways similar to an infant. Rather than use trial and error to learn, they figure out the underlying physical principles at work and then use that knowledge to obtain their goal. Next Ken visits Squam Lake at night to investigate mysterious deaths in the Loon population. The last investigation of the show happens in Stowe, Vermont where scientists have discovered a new species, the Bicknell’s Thrush, and the philandering lifestyle of the female.

#212: LOST ISLAND COLONIES Europeans weren’t the first or the only creatures to colonize the New World. Several species of birds beat them to it– transforming dozens of islands off the cost of Maine into bird colonies long before humans set foot on the continent. But in the last century, these avian colonies were lost, and the birds vanished. 22 miles from the mainland in the Gulf of Maine lies Seal Island. Seal Island has recently begun to restore its former poplations of Puffins, Storm Petrels, Terns, Black Guillemots, and Common Eiders. Ken meets Steve Kress and learns about the unique techniques Steve has developed to attract birds back to their former habitat. Ken and Steve go grubbing for Petrels, serve as decoys for Puffins and watch a dog fight or two over turf.

#213: L. A. STORIES It’s the middle of winter and most of the nation is freezing! But not Ken Dial. He’s in sunny, warm L. A. with the beautiful people and the snowbirds! Birds have come from thousands of miles, all over North America to spend their winter in Southern California. Ken finds gangs of exotic parrots living in residential neighborhoods of L.A.. He visits some ancient avian residents of the ‘hood-the Vultures! And Dr. Dial finds a wintering bird haven in the middle of the Los Angeles urban megalopolis – a place called Newport Back Bay.

Reviews

“Picture a mellow, laid-back version of Bill Nye. Now picture him a little older, a little wiser, and a little… bald. Voila! You’ve got Ken Dial, an Associate Professor of Zoology and Biology at the University of Montana, and a very cool, very funny science guy who loves his work, and can’t help but share the news…. Throughout, the camerawork in tracking these tiny birds is excellent, the onscreen species identification is extremely helpful, Dial is a superb host…. Highly recommended. Editor’s Choice. Four Stars.” – Video Librarian

“… this slightly offbeat ode to the joys of bird watching. Hosted by colorful ornithologist Ken Dial, this three-part birdwatching series surveys a wide range of birds in such far flung locales as Costa Rican jungles and Pacific Northwest forests… the informative series is sure to find a comfortable perch in public library collections where bird watching is popular.” -Booklist

“This peppy video is adapted from the All Bird TV series and hosted by Ken Dial, a biology professor at the University of Montana and an associate of Harvard’s Museum of Comparitive Zoology. Dial, in contrast to many saccharin, dull nature-show hosts, is expressive and entertaining, a bit of a wild man but also informed, interesting, and occasionally irreverent. The background music, another nonentity in many of these shows, is varied and delightful. The content is excellent: great photography with super action shots of the birds, accented by their clear vocalizations. Eminently sensible in limiting its subjects, Adventures in Birdwatching offers six segments that do not try to cover too much. There are in-depth looks at wading birds in Florida, spring landbirds in Massachusetts, predators in the Pacific Northwest, and hummingbirds in Arizona and several takes of tropical species in Costa Rica. Interspersed are lessons in ecology, behavior, breeding habits, feeding, and general biological principles. The viewer is also treated to looks at mammals, butterflies, plant life, and varied scenery, including onsite footage and interviews with field biologists at work. Highly recommended.” -Henry T. Armistead, Free Library of Philadelphia

Wartime newsreels, propaganda documentaries, movies, music and humor chronicle changes in American ideals, lifestyles and morals during the 1940s and 1950s.

The story of the American people at war began in the highly acclaimed series ‘Between The Wars’, and continues in this series narrated by journalist Eric Sevareid. Shocked into action by the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Americans respond with an exhilarating sense of common purpose and build the most powerful war production machine the world has ever known. Wartime newsreels, propaganda documentaries, movies, music and humor chronicle changes in American ideals, lifestyles and morals, tracking the major movements in the lives of Americans during the 1940s and 1950s

Episode #101: While the Storm Clouds Gather In this episode, America emerges from the hard times of the Depression. Radio provides nightly entertainment as well as news from the foreign war zones in Europe and Asia. Most Americans wish to stay out of the war, but they support the efforts of President Roosevelt, lend-lease, the peacetime draft, and the new defense industry.

Episode #102: Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition In this episode, the attack on Pearl Harbor sends a bolt of energy surging through the country. Within a few short months, the nation is mobilized and transformed. Fifteen million civilians become soldiers, sailors and marines. Production of civilian goods ends, and most factories convert to war work.

Episode #103: Sacrifice and Shortages This episode examines how Americans coped with food and gas rationing and shortages of cigarettes and nylons. There are victory gardens, scrap drives, the black market, and the first national income tax. Celebrities such as Jack Benny and Jimmy Durante help boost civilian morale.

Episode #104: A String of Pearls In this episode, patriotic American women answer the call to duty–in the armed forces and in the factories and shipyards. Despite condescension and prejudice, women win a permanent place in the American military, but they soon discover that the men in charge consider this major change in American life only temporary.

Episode #105: On the Shady Side of the Street In wartime America, large numbers of young people leave their homes for military service or work in war plants, sowing the seeds of a sexual revolution. This episode documents the trend away from traditional moral concerns.

Episode #106: Right in der Fuehrer’s Face In this episode, the American government enlists the skills of Hollywood, Tin Pan Alley, and Madison Avenue to grind out propaganda for domestic consumption. Hitler and his cohorts are depicted as diabolical villains, while racial attacks by the media against Japanese Americans lead to the internment of hundreds of civilians.

Episode #107: Thanks for the Memories This episode shows American show business solidly supporting the war effort. Scenes at the Hollywood Canteen and other service clubs show ordinary American enlisted men honored and revered by stars and the public. The comedy routine “Who’s on First?” reflects the big question in major league baseball as most players have gone to war.

Episode #108: Accentuating the Positive This episode depicts Hollywood stars going overseas to put on shows for troops in the war zones. Legends like Bob Hope and Marlene Dietrich stage elaborate events for servicemen. In similar fashion, Armed Forces Radio carries American swing music, news, and pop culture around the world.

Episode #109: Mood Indigo: Blacks and Whites Wartime newsreels reveal that the World War II American home front is as racially segregated as the U.S. armed forces. Although prejudice, discrimination and race riots plague the home front, black civilians continue to back the war effort, and black servicemen distinguish themselves overseas.

Episode #110: It’s Been A Long, Long Time This episode chronicles the war’s end with the dramatic explosion of two atomic bombs. The massive war industry is shut down, and millions in the armed forces are demobilized. The GI Bill, the baby boom, and a new materialism sweep millions into the mass-produced suburbs. Overseas, the seeds of the Cold War, Korea and Vietnam have been planted.
