Episode Descriptions

Episode 101: Mysteries of a Dark Universe
Cosmology has been turned on its head by a stunning discovery that the universe is flying apart in all directions at an ever-increasing rate. Find out what this Nobel Prize winning discovery means for the future of our universe.

Episode 102: The Riddle of Antimatter
One of the deepest mysteries about how our universe came to be may finally be yielding to human investigation. Scientists are mounting new efforts to figure out how matter survived, and what happened to its birth twin, a mysterious substance known as antimatter?

Episode 103: Alien Planets and Eyeball Earths
The hunt for planets beyond our solar system has reached a fever pitch. Scientists are beginning to envision what these worlds are like, and in the process, redefining what a planet might need to spawn life.

Episode 104: Is the Universe Infinite?
Many astronomers now conclude that what we can see, the immense cosmic landscape of stars and galaxies, represents only a small fraction of all there is. Does the universe go on forever? Where do we fit within it?

Episode 105: Cold Sparks to Black Holes: The Energy Extremes of the Universe
What are the energy extremes that define our universe? And how much power can the cosmos wield? Climb a ladder of increasingly powerful events, from frigid gas clouds to nuclear explosions, and travel out to the seething environments of black holes. Find out where Earth fits in the vast power scales of the cosmos.

Episode 106: Venus: Death of a Planet
Long ago, from the fires of our Sun’s birth, twin planets emerged: Venus and Earth. Nature draped one world in the greens and blues of life, while enveloping the other in acid clouds, high heat, and volcanic flows. Why did Venus take such a disastrous turn and Earth developed a vibrant biosphere?

Episode 107: Mars World That Never Was
Did Mars long ago develop far enough for life to arise? If so, does anything still live somewhere underground? The search for answers has revealed the forces that long ago doomed the Red Planet.

Episode 108: Saturn’s Mysterious Moons
From the Cassini spacecraft comes one of the greatest photographic collections of all time. Scientists are using images of Saturn’s moons to uncover a trail of clues pointing to the energy sources and complex chemistry needed to spawn life.

Episode 109: Attack of the Sun
Massive solar eruptions can pose a serious threat to our high-tech society. Learn about the havoc caused by the solar storms of Halloween 2003 and 1859. Dive into the inner regions of the Sun to find out what can cause our star to turn angry.

Episode 110: Birth of the Moon
Scientists have been reconstructing the history of the Moon by scouring its surface, mapping its mountains and craters, and probing its interior. Find out what the origins of the Moon can tell us about our own planet’s beginnings.

Episode 111: Supermassive Black Hole at the Center of the Galaxy
Astronomers have been tracking stars at the center of the Milky Way galaxy to probe a monster black hole that lurks in its dense gas clouds and star fields. They have turned up the best proof to date that black holes exist. Now, they are shooting for the first direct image of a black hole.

Episode 112: How Large is the Universe?
The mind-blowing answer comes from a theory describing the first micro-moments of our universe. Just as scientists began to make precise measurements of the observable universe, new ideas suggest that our visible patch is an impossibly small portion of the whole.

Episode 113: When Will Time End?
How long will the Universe as we know it survive? The answer depends on whether Stephen Hawking’s theory about how black holes decay is right. These strange dense objects are like a clock that tick down to a distant moment when all matter and energy will dissipate into the void.

Episode 114: The Largest Black Holes in the Universe
So far, the largest black hole measured is a whopping 18 billion times the mass of the Sun. Monsters like this have played a central role in the evolution of the universe. They wreak havoc on galaxies, while setting the stage for worlds like ours.

“Brilliant! Galloping out of remotest antiquity, prancing majestically at mankind’s most fabled royal courts, in an awe-inspiring destiny siring all the lineages of racing’s thoroughbreds as well as the mounts for Napolean’s lancers and Gustavus Adolphus’ “Polish-Arabs,” the “Gift from the Desert” is the gorgeously enchanting star of this wondrous film. “At this moment when tragic images bombard us nightly from the Middle East, one of our world’s most expert film-makers has launched a star into our sadly darkened sky. Gift from the Desert chronicles an all too rare interaction with the Arab world whereby 19/20th century U.S. breeders helped to “save” this splendid breed. For joy as well as useful wisdom – come and view this beautiful film !” Dr. Carney Gavin, Historian

Water First draws a clear correlation between clean water and all of the other Millennium Development Goals. The goals are a set of 8 targets set by the UN in the year 2000 and endorsed by 187 nations. Sadly, at the halfway mark, we are less than halfway there. Charles Banda believes that if more people knew about the MDGs we would have a much better chance of achieving them. And, if clean water was the top priority, achieving the goals would be much more feasible. “30% of the goals would automatically be achieved if everyone had clean water,” says John Oldfield of Water Advocates.

From hunger and poverty to women’s equality and population control, HIV/AIDS to environmental sustainability, Banda makes it clear that the best way to assist and empower people in developing nations, and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), is by putting water first.

Filmmaker, Amy Hart not only produced and directed the film, she also shot most of it and edited herself. The project has forged a strong relationship with Charles Banda and Freshwater Project Malawi. Water First gets to the heart of the global water and sanitation crisis,” writes David Douglas, President of Water Advocates. “Through the story of one man in a single African country, Hart documents how development springs from access to safe drinking water. With filmmaking that may save lives, Hart chronicles water’s link to health, girls’ education, environmental protection, women’s empowerment and economic productivity.”

Reviews

“Water First is the perfect primer on the global challenge of providing universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation.” – Sandra Postel, Director of Global Water Policy Project

Eye-opening and inspiring. It is almost impossible for us to imagine living even one day without the clean water we take for granted, but the film compels us to do so. Just as importantly, Water First shows us that it is possible to mend the global water crisis.” – Elizabeth Arkell, Student Movement for Real Change

“A moving and well-done film, featuring African countries, especially Malawi, which would well benefit by access to clean, readily available water and its separation from human waste and wastewater to reduce waterborne diseases and related deaths, childhood stunting, labor and economic deprivations, and poverty. I am not easily impressed, after working in developing countries in water and sanitation for the past 30+ years, but I am impressed by [Amy Hart's] work.” – Barney P. Popkin, Environmental Advisor, U.S. Agency for International Development/Bureau for Asia and the Near East

“This film provides a clear and moving picture of the critical role water plays in each of the 8 United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It can thus be used to raise awareness of clean water supply as well as of the MDGs. The cinematography captures the beauty of the countryside and people in Malawi, and contrasts this with the grim reality faced by women who have to draw water from distant and unprotected water sources. By telling the story of Project Freshwater Malawi, the film also gives an inspiring picture of what can be accomplished by a few dedicated people.” – By Ruth Meinzen-Dick, Senior Research Fellow, International Food Policy Research Institute

“Deftly demonstrates that small change can make a huge impact. I look forward to adding this title to our collection, and I feel it will be used well in a variety of teaching disciplines.” – Patricia O’Donnell, Instructional Media Collections and Services, University of California, Los Angeles

“I really liked the wisdom of the local people: ‘If we were rich and we had money, the government would have come to assist us, but we are poor.’ See any parallels with AIG, subprime housing, etc? I recommend this film to people who want to learn (or teach others) about water in the developing world.” – Dr. David Zetland, Natural Resource Economics and Political Economy, UC Berkeley

“Excellent…Charles Banda is an excellent role model for those who want to contribute something positive at the community level; and he never looks back to see how many are following his good example. The important message is that he is doing it in a very ordinary way, and that ordinary people can do extraordinary things if they want to contribute without expecting any special rewards.” – Luis Gutierrez, Editor, Solidarity, Sustainability, and Non-Violence Research Newsletter

“Water First lets the people of Malawi speak for themselves as viewers are invited to watch the daily struggle of life without access to clean water. Overall, the film is informative and cogently makes the case that water is a fundamentally important issue in advancing human rights and community development in impoverished countries around the world.” – Liz Simmons, Feminist Review

“Clean water is the best way to empower people in developing nations…[In Malawi, Charles Banda] believes that a reliable source of clean water is the key to realizing most of the MDGs. Banda narrates this film and his words together with powerful visuals of Malawi’s landscapes and its citizens demonstrate that water is life…Science, geography, current events, sociology, anthropology, and government classes can utilize this production to learn about the environmental issues facing developing nations.” – Patricia Ann Owens, School Library Journal

“An excellent and worthwhile film, especially for undergraduate students in development studies, since it shows the interconnectedness of development problems. In particular, it demonstrates how water can serve as an entry point for development organizations in addressing the most pressing problems at the community level.” – Sylvia Bergh, Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Anthropology Review Online

Episode 104: VEG-IN! — Jacques loves vegetables and jokes that everything should be considered a vegetable, even chocolate cake! Joking aside, we all know that we don’t eat enough veggies and Jacques creates simple recipes to tempt even the most reluctant. He begins by sharing RAGOUT OF ASPARAGUS with his friend and back-kitchen chef, David Shalleck, and explains the recipe in a step-by-step process.
Episode 109: CLASSIC CONCLUSIONS — CREPES A LA CONFITURE are a childhood favorite of many a Frenchman including both Jacques and his best friend of 50 years, Jean-Claude. Jacques quickly makes the crepe batter for this tasty dessert as a step-by-step demonstration in the same time that it takes to heat the pan. The show continues with ORANGE SOUFFLÉ CRÊPES that are baked until puffy in the oven. A flavorful broth poaches dainty filets of fish in Jacques’ NAGE COURTE OF STRIPED BASS recipe – it’s not nearly as complicated as it sounds. A lustier dish of CODFISH IN OLIVE OIL AND HORSERADISH SAUCE completes the show.

The cast includes Nancy Cartwright, voice of Bart Simpson and Chucky from Rugrats; Daveigh Chase, Disney’s Lilo, Actor, the late Tom Bosley, Comedian, Fred Willard, Actress, Sally Struthers, Bess Armstrong, Cree Summer, Vicky Lewis and Richard Hor- vitz. Each of them brings many years in voice over talent and audience familiarity to each show.

The overall intention of Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures is to provide excellent educational, entertaining material to our audience, while building a groundswell of children, parent and teacher support for the show.

Reviews

“Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures, a half-hour animated series airing on PBS, finds little Betsy grappling with emotions familiar to those about to enter kindergarten. She worries that other kids won’t like her, is intimidated by the size of the school and the rowdy kids on the playground, and is anxious as she tries to figure out where she fits into this big new world away from home. Betsy soon discovers she’s not the only one worrying – many new classmates feel the same way and, to their relief, they find much of the worrying unfounded. Kindergarten is full of adventure; the show’s storylines center around Betsy and her new circle of friends as they make exciting discoveries in the course of their school activities, such as going on field trips and taking care of the classroom pet. This program is more about character development than it is about academic development – although it is PBS so shows do include some very basic practice with letters and numbers.

Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures shines the spotlight on managing emotions, forming relationships, and taking pride in accomplishments. The animation is simple and clearly inspired by the kind of plain lines and bold colors you’d find in an actual kindergartner’s artwork. Betsy herself is a likable character, so little viewers are likely to trust her reassurances that kindergarten really is cool. Some of the other characters may strike some as stereotyped (Snooty Mean Girl, Brainiac-Boy-With-Big-Thick-Glasses, Street-Smart-Urban-Girl, Crabby Principal) but the points are not belabored. Overall, Betsy’s Kindergarten Adventures can be interesting viewing for rising preschoolers, and especially helpful for little ones starting kindergarten.” -Parents’ Choice

Often overlooked by medical experts, the WAY we use our body often creates disease. Why do couch potatoes and competitive athletes suffer from the same chronic ailments, disease, and pain? It’s because, like most of us, neither group is using their body in the way it was mechanically designed to be used!

Analyzing human movement (biomechanics) used to be for increasing athletic performance until biomechanical scientist Katy Bowman decided to apply those same principles to the every-day use of the human machine for the purpose of reducing common disease.

This scientific, instructional and “user-friendly” series will show you what your body SHOULD be able to do; What your body CAN do right now and what specific movements you need to do (in the comfort of your own home!) to repair your human machine!

Episode Descriptions

Episode 101: When Your Doctor Prescribes Exercise – When your doctor recommends exercise, they are usually not referring to high-impact exercise, intense bouts, or even athletics. Here are a handful of simple exercises for opening the key joints of the hips, shoulders and spine, to improve full-body health issues like hypertension and raising good cholesterol. A great place to get started!

Episode 102: When You Hurt All Over – What’s one to do when you hurt all over but your doctor tells you that you need to exercise? These gentle stretching exercises will improve the flow of blood and lymph, even to the extremities, reduce internal pressures, raise immunity, and improve muscle strength.

Episode 103: Fix Your Feet – Most foot pain is entirely preventable and reversible through a thoughtfully designed exercise routine. Fallen arches, inflamed fascia, and over- tight foot muscles are all created through movement habits, and can quickly improve when those habits are corrected.

Episode 104: Knees and Hips – While the causes of knee and hip problems are as varied as individual sufferers, the mechanics of these joints are the same in everyone. These exercises stretch and strengthen the muscles most involved in preserving the health and mobility of these important joints. The exercises are adaptable even if you’ve had a joint replacement. They are challenging — and necessary– for runners and other athletes who suffer from knee or hip problems.

Episode 105: Below the Belt For Men – It is a well-hidden fact that pelvic floor disorders (PFD) are just as common among men and women, especially when you add in prostate conditions and sexual dysfunction. You’ll learn how misalignment decreases the strength of the muscles that hold the weight of the organs off of the prostate, and how a handful of specifically chosen exercises will begin to bring the body back into alignment and increase blood flow to extremities in this area.

Episode 106: Down There For Women – More than 80 percent of women will suffer pelvic floor disorders in their lifetime, yet most women have no idea that pelvic alignment is essential for proper pelvic floor function. Katy shows an a easy-to-follow protocol for stretching and strengthening the muscles that keep the pelvis aligned, allowing the pelvic floor to operate less like a hammock and more like a trampoline.

Episode 107: When You Can’t Breathe – You were taught to swim, how to ride a bike, and even how to walk, though you probably don’t remember it. Breathing is comprised of coordinated muscle movements just like all of these, but chances are nobody has ever shown how to do it correctly. Bowman explains the mechanics of optimal breathing, and the exercises that will train the muscles to increase oxygen intake!

Episode 108: Easy Rx…ercise for Diabetics – Exercise prescription needs to be specific when dealing with diabetes. Intense programs can cause rapid changes in blood sugar that can stress the adrenal glands and slow metabolism. Easy Rx…ercise for Diabetics is designed to increase basal metabolic rate (metabolism) and minimize stress and adrenaline production. It offers a protocol that includes a handful of gentle exercises to improve circulation in the feet, lower legs and mid-section, specifically to meet the needs of the diabetic population.

Episode 109: My Hands Hurt: From Elbows to Fingers – With all the typing, driving and computer work done on a daily basis, it’s no wonder that the numerous muscles, bones, nerves and attachments from the elbows on down, often start to complain. Targeting all the tissues that supply the hands with health and mobility, Bowman guides you through a series of simple but profound exercises to align and unwind the neck, shoulders, elbows and hands.

Episode 110: Get Your Balance Back- To lose one’s sense of balance is to lose one’s independence. Bowman defines balance as “the ability to stand unsupported on one foot,” because that’s the skill needed to walk safely and confidently. This easy-to- follow program stretches and strengthens the muscles necessary for balance, and for independent living.

Episode 111: Biomechanics for Strong Bones – With so much misunderstanding of the term “weight-bearing,”very few women are getting the correct exercises to align their skeleton correctly. This easy-to-follow program maximizes bone-loading to create bone-building signals at the areas commonly affected by bone loss: wrists, ribs, vertebrae, and hips.

Episode 112: Biomechanics for Bad Backs – So many people suffer from chronic backaches, but where do they come from? Here you’ll come to understand the origin of the back pain, and get a simple and deeper understanding on how to re-educate the body on proper movement and alignment. These gentle exercises work to free up the spine and can even be done while traveling on the road.

Episode 113: From the Shoulders Up – Chronic headaches, foggy brain, and even pressure behind the eyes can result from long hours at the computer and a lack of mobility in the neck and shoulders. This is a basic exercise prescription for improving circulation to the neck and head, as well as tips for better typing and driving ergonomics.

Episode 114: Smart Digestion – While digestive disorders like IBS and acid reflux are often associated with nutritional choices, often times it is the position of structures like the swallowing tube, the over-compression of the abdomen associated with slouchy posture, and body position when eating! You’ll learn five exercises that maximize body efficiency for optimal digestion.

Reviews

This remarkable docudrama, written and directed by Robert Child, chronicles the story of 11 African-American soldiers who were captured and brutally murdered near Wereth, Belgium, by the Nazi SS during the Battle of the Bulge. The men were members of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion, and their terrible tale has been called one of the least-known atrocities of World War II. Narrated by actor Corey Reynolds, The Wereth Eleven weaves together excellent interviews with WWII veterans and historians, never-before-seen archival footage, and top-notch visual effects (including CGI-animated graphics), while Ken Arnold leads an impressive cast in the reenactments. Highly recommended. Editor’s Choice. – Video Librarian
