According to all reports, during her maiden voyage on the night of April 14th, 1912, the HMS Titanic struck an iceberg, and sank into the North Atlantic two hours and forty minutes later. At the time, the Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world. The total death toll was 1,517, making it one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in history and by far the most infamous. The Titanic used some of the most advanced technology available at the time and was popularly believed to be unsinkable. Legend holds that nearly $300 million worth of diamonds still rest in the ship’s holds.
