A New Take on Anna Karenina
This newly imagined retelling of Russian author Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel is set in the late nineteenth century, centered around a Russian aristocrat: Anna Karenina. Tolstoy's novel was first published in book form in 1878. Many critics consider Anna Karenina the greatest work of literature ever written.
The story takes place in the early 20th century, and explores timeless themes of faith, family, love, and marriage against the backdrop of imperial Russian society. The plot centers on an extramarital affair between Anna and Count Alexei Vronsky that scandalizes the social circles of Saint Petersburg. Anna’s tragic story unfolds after she falls in love with the dashing young cavalry officer.
The big-budget eight-part Russian language drama series was directed by Karen Shakhnazarov and stars Yelizaveta Boyarskay, Maxim Matveye, Kirill Grebenschikov. Subtitled in English, it is now available on Amazon Prime Video in the United States.
